Jay N. Filer

Jay Filer is a master’s student in Mental Health Counseling and Counselor Education at Indiana University, Bloomington. Jay earned a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University Bloomington in psychology while also studying sociology and African American and African Diaspora studies in 2021. They are a therapist-in-training, working with the Bloomington Center for Connection to provide individual counseling and group counseling for all ages.  

Jay embraces the Bloomington Center for Connection’s use of Relational Cultural Theory (RCT) and the way authenticity and connection create healing. They strive to help individuals foster skills to form and maintain growth-fostering relationships. Jay is interested in exploring the role cultural context and intersectional identities play in our mental health.

They aim to break down barriers to mental health care for people of color and other marginalized communities. They incorporate aspects of expressive arts therapy, trauma-informed mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing, and relational awareness into their work. Jay works with teenagers, emerging adults, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and anyone who thinks they’d be a good fit.

In their free time, they enjoy making art, watching and analyzing movies, playing video games, and spending time with those they love.
