Constance M. Johnson

(they/them)

Constance provides a lived experience in the therapeutic setting of complex developmental trauma such as rural poverty, neglect, child sexual assault (CSA), parental incarceration, parental mental illness, psychological and physical abuse, and bullying. They carry the lived experience of adult traumas including domestic violence and problematic substance use. They understand first hand how our experiences from childhood can shape our outlook, behaviors, and access to resources into adulthood. They view the “symptoms” that can arise from these experiences as strengths that allowed one to survive, including those we may need to unlearn or shift when we no longer need them.

Constance is a licensed social worker and an EMDR-trained clinician with advanced training in IFS-informed EMDR and Avoidance in EMDR therapy. They embrace BCC’s use of Relational Cultural Theory (RCT) because it values authenticity and mutual empowerment through growth-fostering relationships. This can help us rewire the effects of trauma that often lead us to isolate and disconnect ourselves from others. They also appreciate how RCT places the dismantling of toxic cultural conditioning at the fore of its purpose.

Constance strives to be equitable in their practice and personal life viewing the world through a trauma-informed anti-oppressive lens. This includes a lifelong effort to decolonize their mind and their practice. They are an abolitionist who values reconciliation, harm reduction, and resources for all.

Some folks they work well with:

  • LGBTQIA+ community members
  • those who have experienced developmental trauma or childhood adversity
  • those who have experienced domestic violence or other relational traumas
  • those who have emotional and physical responses to the current events of the world
  • those who have been harmed by the criminal legal system
  • those seeking EMDR and/or IFS therapy

  • anyone who feels Constance would be a good fit as their therapist!

In their free time, they can be found reading several books, playing with their pets (including two giant dogs and three kitties), overthinking, playing games, or indulging in various streaming services.
